Signs You’re Ready to Downsize

May 22, 2020

How Do You Know It’s Time to Downsize?

It’s not always easy to tell when it’s time to consider downsizing and preparing for the next chapter of life. The process of downsizing can seem intimidating, daunting and even exhausting to some, so you may be putting it off as long as possible. Learn some signs that can help you determine whether it might be time to consider downsizing.

Signs You’re Ready to Downsize

The following signs can help you determine whether it’s time for you or your parents to consider moving to a senior living community:

Retirement. Transitioning out of the workforce to retirement is a social and financial adjustment. This is a good time to consider downsizing and therefore reducing the unnecessary expenses that come along with maintaining a large home. You want to be able to spend your retirement doing things you enjoy and spending time with loved ones, not worrying about large monthly expenses.

Multiple Empty Rooms. When talking to seniors who are considering downsizing, most report that they really only “live” in a few rooms. If this applies to you, it might be a sign it’s time to consider downsizing. A home requires quite a bit of work; whether it’s everyday chores that can become especially daunting as you age or larger home repairs, maintaining a large household can be challenging and costly. An easy way to reduce the amount of household work you’re tasked with each month is to downsize into a smaller home.

Lifestyle Changes. Downsizing can help you remove daily tasks, reduce the amount of home maintenance you need to perform each month and allow you to spend time doing the things you truly enjoy. When you downsize, you’ll have more time to spend on your favorite hobbies, and visiting with your friends and family.

Decluttering. Oftentimes, people don’t want to downsize because getting rid of personal stuff is such a large task to tackle. However, decluttering allows you to get organized and plan ahead for a new lease on life without all the extra stuff.

Health Challenges. Smaller homes are easier to navigate from a physical perspective, especially those that are one level. Traveling up and down the stairs is difficult on joints and may become dangerous over time. Moving to a smaller, more manageable home may allow you to maintain independence longer.

Benefits of Downsizing

There are a variety of benefits to downsizing. By downsizing to a smaller home, you can save money, become more prepared for the future and be free from unnecessary household expenses. Downsizing has the ability to improve your overall quality of life, plus help you focus on the next chapter of retirement.
