My Sister’s Gallery Present: “A Joy Into Nature” by Niesdri Welsh

July 28, 2023

Niesdri learned how to draw from her friend’s uncle in kindergarten. When she was in College, she discovered that this friend’s (now late) Uncle G.M. Sudharta- was a very well-known caricature artist in Indonesia. After she retired from teaching the Indonesian language at Cornell University in 2015, she learned basic watercolors from Betsy Liano (she is well known for Painting Concepts in Brighton, NY).

Niesdri is an active member of the Pittsford Art Group. She has won several awards from the annual Barnes and Noble shows for her work, including the Juror Award in 2019-2020, The Body of Work Award in 2020-2021 and The Merit Award in 2021-2022 and in 2022-2023. She is particularly drawn to rusty items—you may have seen her detailed rusty locks at the annual 6×6 Rochester Contemporary Arts fundraiser. Niesdri has a collection of bird paintings, many of which are frequent visitors to her backyard.

She likes to carry her pocket camera everywhere she goes to take pictures of different subjects to paint and enjoys doing commission work.
