Improving Social Wellness in Seniors

June 28, 2018

There’s nothing better than spending time with family and friends. But did you know that regular socializing can also make seniors happier and healthier? It’s true! In fact, research shows regular social contact can help seniors emotionally, cognitively and physically. Additionally, studies have shown that those who maintain proper social wellness are able to maintain an independent lifestyle longer than those who aren’t.

Benefits of Social Wellness for Seniors

Social wellness is defined as the way we build, maintain and interact in our relationships with others. Here are just some of the ways maintaining social wellness can impact your overall well-being:

  1. Boosts your immune system. Studies show seniors with strong social connections have stronger immune systems than those who don’t.
  2. Reduces your risk for chronic conditions. Research has found that seniors who regularly participate in social activities are less likely to develop conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and even certain types of cancer.
  3. Improves cardiovascular health. Seniors who report feelings of loneliness and isolation also tend to have higher blood pressure, putting them at a greater risk for developing cardiovascular disease.
  4. Reduces anxiety and depression. Maintaining healthy social connections plays a key role in reducing stress, which in turn lowers your risk for anxiety and depression.
  5. May help you live longer. Several studies show seniors who are social are generally healthier and live longer than those who report feeling isolated.

Easy Ways to Stay Social as You Age

Staying social as you age doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are five easy ways seniors can stay active and maintain healthy social connections:

  1. Set up regular lunch or dinner dates with friends and family. Sharing a meal with family and friends is a great way to catch up and stay social while also enjoying some delicious food.
  2. Volunteer in your community. Doing some good in your community is not only good for keeping you socially connected but can give you a sense of accomplishment.
  3. Join a local senior center. Senior centers offer numerous programs and social activities for seniors, ideal for those looking to meet new people.
  4. Learn something new. Many local universities and colleges offer free or deeply discounted courses for seniors. It presents a perfect opportunity to both stay social and do something good for your mind.
  5. Take a senior-friendly exercise class. Regular exercise is key to healthy aging. Joining a senior fitness center or signing up for some exercise classes allows you to meet new people while improving your overall health and wellness.
