My Sister’s Gallery Presents: GPS

June 19, 2026

GPS: AKA Julie Gelfand, Steve Piper, and Ira Srole are photographers and longtime friends who, unlike most of their classmates in RIT’s MFA photography program back in the late 1970s, never left Rochester. They stayed put; built their lives, families, photo careers, and friendships in the city they’ve called home ever since.

Their work will be on display in My Sister’s Gallery, at the Episcopal Church Home main building on Mount Hope Avenue through July 6th.

Julie’s photos are from a variety of locations during a three-week trip in May 2025 to Portugal and Northwestern Spain. People, more people, cats, cows, cars, no castles. Not typical tourist photos.

Steve’s images are from an ongoing project of abstract photos made photographing railroad freight cars in the western NY area.

Ira’s photos are from ten years ago, made in Rochester during evening and nighttime hours when light is at a premium, illuminating familiar scenes with an otherworldly intensity.
