How to Boost Your Immune System this Winter

Winter is almost here! This typically means that colder weather, holiday celebrations and family gatherings are right around the corner. Although this year may be a bit different due to COVID-19,  this is still a time when you’re more susceptible to illnesses.

Certain illnesses like the flu, bronchitis and pneumonia tend to be more common during the colder winter season. And even more important than ever, COVID-19 remains present. This is why it’s imperative to do everything you can to boost your immune system and keep your body healthy.

How Does the Immune System Work?

Your immune system’s main function is to protect your body from harmful substances, germs, bacteria and cell changes that could make you fall ill. Your immune system is made up of a variety of organs, cells and proteins.

When your immune system is running smoothly, you probably don’t pay much attention to how it functions or what purpose it serves. However, the slightest hint of a cold or the flu may have you running to the drugstore to get supplements to boost your immune system. Instead of waiting until you’re on the verge of getting sick, make your immune health a priority all winter long.

4 Ways to Boost Your Immune System

Here are a few ways you can actively boost your immune system and avoid getting sick as best you can:

  1. Consume a Healthy Diet. The right foods can keep your immune system primed to fight off germs and viruses. Here are some foods that you can consume that serve as immune system boosters: foods rich in vitamin A, such as broccoli and red bell peppers; foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and strawberries; and foods that contain high levels of protein, such as meats, eggs and beans. Adding these foods into your regular diet can strengthen your immune system over time.

 

  1. Get Enough Sleep Every Night. Getting an adequate amount of sleep every night is so important to your overall state of well-being. Sleep is one of the strongest components that regulates your immune health. When you get 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night, your immune system is able to re-fuel itself to help your body fight off germs, bacteria and illness during the day.

 

  1. Reduce Your Stress Levels. Stress is inevitable and something that we all experience on occasion. However, research has shown that high levels of stress can actually lead to a weakened immune system, which in turn can result in your body being unable to fight off illnesses. It’s important to try to reduce the amount of stress you have, if possible. One way to naturally reduce your stress levels is by incorporating yoga into your weekly routine. Studies show that yoga may help you reduce your stress and anxiety.

 

  1. Make Exercise Part of Your Regular Routine. Regular exercise needs to be a staple in your weekly routine if you want to live a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. Regular exercise can improve your cardiovascular health, lower your blood pressure and promote good circulation throughout your body. All these benefits allow your immune system to move freely and perform efficiently.
