Summer vacation is a special time for children. It means the end of the school year, and lots of time for fun and leisure activities. That’s why many grandparents look forward to the summer as well, because it’s a great time to spend time with your grandkids without scheduling around school and extra-curricular activities.
Not sure of which activities to do with your grandchildren? Here’s a look at some ideas of how to enjoy the summer days with your loved ones.
1. Go to a Museum
Museums offer a great opportunity to explore the past, present and potential future of the world with your grandchildren. Most museums are open Monday through Friday, with some open on weekends too. They usually feature special exhibits from time to time that could capture your interest. For example, The Strong (National Museum of Play) here in Rochester explores fun via interactive exhibits. Take some time to explore the museums in your area and talk with your grandkids to plan a visit!
2. Check Out Animal Attractions
From aquariums to zoos, many animal attractions are open to the public every day of the week, with the extra bonus of some offering discounts to children and seniors. The kids can learn a great deal from the exhibits, and you might be able to learn something about the animals you didn’t know before! You can start by asking your grandchildren what kind of animals they enjoy, then checking for animal attractions in your area to see if there are any special exhibits. Then you can plan a fun-filled day together.
3. Try Gardening
Gardening is a great activity for you and your grandchildren that you can start right in your own home. It’s a good way to keep the children active, and they get to learn about plants and their development. You may even want to help them start their own special garden that’s just right for them. Not to mention, gardening can help improve your memory while creating meaningful experiences with your grandchildren.
4. Play Indoor Games
Sometimes nature doesn’t cooperate, and you and your grandkids are stuck inside on a rainy day. And while sometimes it’s fun to play in the rain, there are many options available for indoor fun and bonding. Teach your grandchildren how to play some indoor games you used to play as a child. Have a collection of board or card games ready to go for some competition. If mind games are more your sport, try some puzzles or riddles to keep the brain active.
5. Teach Them a Hobby or Craft
If there is a skill or hobby that you enjoy, why not teach it to your grandchildren? Children can be fast learners, and you both would benefit greatly from your teaching them something that you are good at. The best part is that any lessons you teach your grandkids will last with them for the rest of their lives. Any skill you have can be taught to them, from knitting and crocheting, to woodworking and mechanics. And chances are after reading this, you already have a few ideas that can get you started.
